Artist's
Statement |
I am a Yorkshireman by birth and domicile. But, because my
early training was at the Edinburgh College of Art where I
was taught by Scots, I have always considered myself to belong
to the Scottish School of painting. In other words, like many
Scottish painters, I glory in the use of vibrant colour and
richly textured paint.
My subject-matter tends to be rather escteric. Starting with
clay pigeon shooters in the late '80's, I have explored a
number of themes which seem to melt seamlessly into each other
as they develop. For example, Morris dancers; the Green Man;
the Hobby Horse and the Centaur appeared one after the other
in my paintings. Most recently, I have based my work on images
from Irish folklore as related by Sean O'Connall, the great
kerry storyteller.
One month a year; usually August, I escape from the studio,
and paint landscape out-of-doors, preferably in a warm climate.
